Don’t’ Feed the Beast

When Sam Blue went to the zoo

He was told one thing never to do

Never feed the beasts and creatures

So on a trip with his class from school

Sam planned to follow this rule

He’d listen to the field trip teachers

Zoo animals, however

Are persuasive and clever

Sam would be challenged indeed

Always in the eating mood

Always looking for some food

Zoo animals always want to feed

There were vampire bats in their habitats

Gators, wolves and saber toothed cats

They all looked for snacks as they went prowling

Possum swung through trees like a flying trapeze

Trying to keep up with the chimpanzees

Their stomachs growled like the wolves howling

The Elephant had a clogged up trunk

He went and sniffed up a stinky skunk

He thought it was cheese, one of the smelly types

The hawks, the fox and the cockatoos

Stole snacks from the folks watching kangaroos

Lions watched zebras like they were steaks with stripes

Aardvarks ate mice droppings, guessing they were ants

The Ox dreamt of salad toppings, dressing and plants

He dreamt as he ate his boring oats

Raccoons and baboons stared through the glass

Waiting for people with balloons to pass

They thought balloons were fruit that floats

The hyenas laughed their hyena laughs

As they watched all the hungry giraffes

Eat flowers from the terrariums

The polar bears would sit and stare

Stare at confetti’s of fish everywhere

As if they were appetizers in aquariums

Flies on the hogs got eaten by frogs

Beavers ate hotdogs made out of logs

As people passed with their purses and packs

On the backs of hippos throughout the day

Birds ate bugs like they were at a buffet

Monkeys reached out to grab people’s snacks

As Sam ate his lunch, with every treat

The beasts he was watching, watched him eat

Each one wanted some

Snacks, he had plenty, treats, he had many

He didn’t give those animals any

Nothing, none, not even a crumb

They came to a cage, at the end of the day

The cage where the Grizzly Lizards stay

He could hear them breathing from where he stood.

“Don’t feed the animals”, read all of the signs

But Sam couldn’t see past the trees and the vines

So he went up to the cage, close as he could

Like a curtain, the vines cleared

Over Sam, a beast appeared

Breathe steaming down, through a hungry grin

Before Sam could catch glance

A scaly claw grabbed his pants

And pulled him right in

After a tug and a pull, the beast swallowed Sam whole

Then scurried along happy and full

Sam’s snacks remained under that sign on the wall

Don’t feed the animals, read the signs overhead

Sam didn’t mean to, but he did instead

…..He fed the animals after all
